Subspecies and Distribution
- Monotypic (J. E. Gray, 1829, China)
– N & C China locally through Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui and N Hubei to S Gansu, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hunan; range much reduced and apparently has been extirpated from Shanxi and Hebei.
Introduced to several areas, e.g. Britain (possibly extinct), France,
Germany, Austria and Hawaii, but most of these populations probably
not self-sustaining; well established in Czech Republic.
