    Subspecies and Distribution
  • Monotypic (Temminck, 1836, Japan)
    – Breeds in S Japan on Honshu, Shikoku and possibly Kyushu; recently found breeding in Jeju Is, S Korea; one breeding report from Taiwan, and has been recorded in spring and summer in Russia (Primorye and Sakhalin). Winters from Ryukyu Is to Philippines.

    – sub-Saharan Africa, São Tomé and Príncipe, and St Helena.
  • Gallinula chloropus pyrrhorrhoa (A. Newton, 1861)
    – Comoro Is, Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius.
  • Gallinula chloropus orientalis (Horsfield, 1821)
    – Seychelles, Andaman Is, S Peninsular Malaysia, Greater Sundas and W Lesser Sundas to Philippines and Palau Is.

    – Africa S of Sahara, Madagascar.
